Are You in the Perfection Trap?

What’s the perfection trap? It’s when you think that everything you do has to be perfect before you share it with the world. You say that you’re not sharing it because it’s not done to your standards. Or, it’s not ready. And, the result is that you don’t put out anything at all. But God wants us to move. If he puts something on our hearts or in our minds then we need to just do it. Not moving is just holding us back from our purpose.

How it Happens?

Perfectionism is just a cloak for fear. What are you afraid of? For many of us it’s failure, being judged or not knowing what to do next if things actually work out (which they will). All of those scenarios could happen — or they could not happen. Truthfully, if you’re waiting until you’re no longer afraid, then you’re waisting your time. Believe me, no one has ever accomplished anything great by doing nothing. Being afraid is fine. The most successful people are. But, they take risks in spite of their fear. The difference between your current self and the person that you want to be is that person knows that the secret to winning is moving.

So How Do You Get Out of the Perfection Trap?

You have to ignore your feelings and emotions and take the first step. When you do, it’ll still be scary, but you will be able to take a bigger step to a bigger place with more opportunities because of it. Make this actionable. When you feel fear today do it anyway. It doesn’t have to be major. It could be having a tough conversation or riding a roller coaster. It could be posting a story or going on live on social media. Just do something small until you are able to do something big.

There are more opportunities available to you now than at any other time in history. Take advantage.

Affirmation: I move even though I’m scared

Scripture: But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. - 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
