Thought For The Day

Pride. It can be a beautiful thing. It can keep you focused on goals and it can help you achieve what once may have seemed unachievable. But just like ice cream, cookies and cake, having too much can be bad for you. (Ok, can you tell I have a sweet tooth?) St. Augustine said it is humility that makes men as angels; it was (too much) pride that changed angels into devils.

I’m sometimes guilty of having too much pride. I will give you the shirt off my back, and I’m quick to offer a word of encouragement, but often find it difficult to accept help. We ALL are in need of help at some point(s) in our lives. Help doesn’t have to take shape in financial form. It can be assistance on the job, help with homework, help with dealing with a sick family member, or simply giving / receiving advice.

But now here’s the key: that which you are willing to GIVE freely, you must be willing to FORGET freely. The last thing a prideful person needs is to constantly hear, “remember when I……………….”. You don’t need to remind anyone of the things you’ve done for them. Believe me….they remember (even if they don’t acknowledge it). Besides……if you did it for the right reason, then you’ve already forgotten about it yourself. But if you didn’t, well…………..

That’s when that angel changes to the devil.

Here is today’s thought:

"It is better to lose your pride with someone you love rather than to lose that someone you love with your useless pride."

– John Ruskin
