According to TMZ, Malcolm X wrote a letter to his mentor and Nation of Islam Leader, Elijah Muhammad, asking for marital advice in 1959. It’s now 2018 – approximately 53 years after Malcolm’s death – and his letter is on the market for a cool $75,000.
The outspoken community leader reached out to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad to detail his relationship to his then future wife, and the issues that’d encountered for months.
The four-page letter began with Malcolm apologizing to his mentor for “burdening” him with his troubles.
“I do not like to burden you with personal troubles of my own, but I feel obligated to you to enclose the facts that are contained in this letter. It is you (thanks to ALLAH) who made me what I am today, and I my life and my entire being to you; even though I know all praise is due to ALLAH." He went on to say, "I have complete faith in whatever way you wish or may chose (or may not) to take it up with her."
It’s said Malcolm’s son first acquired the letter years ago, and turned it over to his attorney. Eventually, the attorney sold the documents to a collector, who went on to sell it, and that collector did the same. Years later, the letter is in the hands of Moments in Time, and sitting on the auction block.
As many should know, Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz were married until the day of his assassination in 1965.
