Russell Simmons is the latest entertainment vet to land a biopic, and Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is set to pen the mogul’s story.
The biopic is called Life and Def: Sex Drugs Money + God, and is said to focus on Simmons’ rise “from the inner city streets of Queens to one of the most influential music/fashion culture impresarios of his era,” reports Deadline.
FOX partnered with Kenya Barris’ production company, Khalabo Ink Society last year, to tell stories about of people and scenarios in “our society” that are usually overlooked. Thus, why not tell the story of one of the men behind hip-hop’s rise in America?
Simmons story will start in the late ‘80s when he was a party and record promoter and follow his life and career as he worked to develop some of the biggest artists the culture knows today i.e. LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Kanye West, and Jay-Z.
There’s currently no release date, but rumor has it, the biopic will drop some time in 2020.
