Boston couple who paid housekeeper $35 a month for 13 years dodge prison

A miserly Boston area couple who paid their housekeeper a paltry $35 a month for more than 13 years have been spared prison.

Martha Smalanskas, 48, and her husband Richard, 49, somehow avoided doing time after pleading guilty to the mistreatment of an immigrant they illegally smuggled into the U.S., according to the Boston Globe. The duo, who has three children, forced the Bolivian woman to work around-the-clock between 1997 and 2011.

They recruited her while she was 16 and they were living in the South American country. They then forged documents to make it appear she was relative when they moved back to the U.S.

Once in America, they took her passport and made her work six days a week between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. — a total of 84 hours per week.
