See it! Hall of Science in Queens turns vacant lot into classic drive-in movie theater
Call it “Invasion of the Drive-In Movie Makers.”
New Yorkers can speed back in time to the days of classic B-movies, real buttered popcorn and, most important, making out in the backseat of a Chevy Caprice thanks to two artists who have transformed a New York Hall of Science lot into the “Empire Drive-In.”
The pop-up cineplex features a big screen built from reclaimed wood and a old-timey concession stand, but the main bit of eye candy are the seats: 60 cars reclaimed from a Brooklyn junkyard by artists Todd Chandler and Jeff Stark.
“We try to preserve the stories in these vehicles,” Stark said, as he sat in one of the classic muscle cars. “So in this Caprice, we have air fresheners in the grill. And in that van towards the back, we left the love letters (we found).”
