The Bronx Academy for Software Engineering is just four weeks old, but it's already earning praise for bringing cutting-edge classes to students living in under-served neighborhoods.
More than 400 kids applied for just 120 seats in the first class of ninth graders at BASE, where every student takes computer programming in addition to the usual high school classes.
"There's a lot of focus on building digital skills," said Michelle Peluso, CEO of the online retailer Gilt, who visited BASE last week with tech business leaders led by Schools Chancellor Walcott. "It's a really interesting model."
