Church

At first it seemed like any other Sunday morning service. At the conclusion of my Dad's sermon, he "opened the doors of the Church" and extended the invitation to salvation. Just like Sundays before, he talked about the ways you could join the church as a candidate for baptism or by Christian experience. Dad walked across the pulpit and down the aisles giving his appeal. He was just about to wrap things up with a benediction when the choir members behind him and congregation broke into thunderous applause.

One by one, my siblings and me filed out the choir stand. It wasn't planned and we never discussed it but somehow, we made a simultaneous and instantaneous decision to join church that day. Our hearts raced, nervous and excited at the same time. Only in elementary school, we didn't fully understand the journey ahead- the joy, pain or power. Yet one thing was certainly clear- we felt something indescribable and undeniable.  We felt love. Encouraged by the applause of the congregation, we walked forward boldly. When my sister, brother and me walked to the front of the church, my Dad turned around to see what the fuss was about. Shocked and surprised, he greeted us with a warm embrace symbolic of a heavenly welcome.

Each week, our church dedicated a portion of the worship service to "children's meditation", a time when two brave young people, some shy and others fearless, either volunteered or were volun-told to give a story and prayer. Every time we gathered, we sang a familiar song.

Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to him belong, they are weak but he is strong.

   Yes, Jesus loves me

   Yes, Jesus loves me

   Yes, Jesus loves me

For the Bible tells me so.

Then and now, the words of that song minister to my heart. February is American Heart Month and Black History Month, a time dedicated to heart health, history and legacy. Along the way we pause to celebrate the ones we love on Valentine's Day. Take this time to check the status of your physical and emotional heart. Take the time to trace your history. Find out what makes your heart beat fast and what slows it down. Find out what makes your heart sing. Take action. Protect your heart. Harness the power of love. Sing a new song.
